Is Baby Beach Good for Snorkeling?

Baby Beach Aruba - protected natural lagoon with white sand and calm turquoise water
Baby Beach's protected lagoon -- the safest snorkeling in Aruba

Baby Beach in San Nicolas is the answer to Aruba's most common snorkeling question: where can children and beginners safely experience the reef? The naturally enclosed lagoon delivers year-round calm water that no other Aruba spot can match.

The Case for Baby Beach

A natural limestone reef forms a near-complete semicircle around the bay, absorbing virtually all swell from the open Caribbean and leaving the lagoon almost always flat calm. Water depth in the lagoon averages just 0.5-1.5 metres in the shallows, graduating to 2-3 metres towards the reef. Children as young as five regularly snorkel here safely with parental supervision.

Marine Life

The shallow lagoon supports a surprisingly diverse reef ecosystem. Large parrotfish are the stars -- you'll hear them audibly crunching coral before you see them. The white sand that makes Baby Beach so photogenic is actually parrotfish waste. The lagoon also holds butterflyfish, sergeant majors, blue tangs, and wrasse. The outer reef edge (a 150-metre swim) holds nurse sharks under overhangs and occasional sea turtles.

The Honest Limitation

Baby Beach is 30+ km from Palm Beach -- roughly 35-40 minutes by car. It is a dedicated trip rather than a quick visit. If marine life intensity is your priority, Mangel Halto or Boca Catalina deliver more impressive encounters closer to Palm Beach.

Baby Beach wins on calmness and safety for very young children. Boca Catalina wins for sea turtle sightings and proximity to Palm Beach hotels. For families with confident child swimmers, Boca Catalina may be more exciting.
