The Sponge Reef

Nutrient-rich ocean circulation around the north point feeds an extraordinary sponge community. Orange barrel sponges reach 1m tall. Hawksbill sea turtles feed directly on sponges here. Green turtles graze seagrass edges. Eagle rays patrol deeper sections at 4-8m.

Seasonal Conditions

Best: May-October - trade winds weaken, northwest swell dissipates, surface conditions calm for morning snorkeling. November-April: North swell can affect the site - check conditions before entering. Always best before 10 AM.

Tip

Check the California Lighthouse windsock from the parking area - if it is fully horizontal, expect significant surface chop at Arashi.
